Wisconsin Woodscapes
by Nancy Weinberger
Wisconsin Woodscapes combine the artist’s love for nature and wood into an original, unique three-dimensional form of art. Photos of a commissioned piece are taken on site by the artist who then sketches a proportional work drawing. Wood selection varies, and can include white ash with its vivid grain lending itself for use as sky or accompanying foliage; oak, used for dramatic lines afforded when stained; and birch, having a softer grain for gentle contrast. Transferring the scaled replica of the building to wood begins the procedure. A contractors scroll saw is used for cutting the infinite number of pieces which are then sanded, stained, and rubbed with tung oil. After the basic structure is glued in place, a long-nosed tweezers is used to help position the intricate ornamental detail. A rough cedar frame is attached and a plaque is then adhered, which can designate owner, building name, and/or construction date of historical building. Numerous turn of the century structures have been commissioned thus far.

When contacted, Nancy will meet with interested persons bringing an extensive portfolio, as well as a completed piece as a sample. She explains construction procedures, will quote a price, and with a commitment handshake, will place you on the commissioned wait list. Nearing the start of your construction, she takes many photos, draws a picture to scale and makes an appointment to discuss how your picture will be built. She welcomes a visit to her shop to monitor progress, if desired.
